Embarking on the journey of starting a small business brings numerous challenges and valuable lessons. Recognizing the significance of diverse backgrounds and perspectives for the success of our company and society, I’ve come to understand that waiting for progress is insufficient.
In 2020, we assessed our company’s success, noting achievements in serving women and minority-led businesses. However, we recognized a critical gap in racial and ethnic diversity within our team. Shifting from passive to active recruiting, we proactively sought candidates from underrepresented communities, revealing a need for broader efforts to address systemic disparities.
In response to stark statistics revealing the lack of diversity in accounting professions, we’re committed to addressing systemic issues at their roots. We’re actively engaging with students from underrepresented communities, volunteering with Cincinnati Public Schools and offering $25,000 in scholarships over four years to support aspiring accountants from underrepresented communities. Each August, Excelsior celebrates its birthday by contributing 1% of the past year’s revenues to nonprofit organizations and causes selected by our team members. For our 6th birthday in August 2024, we’re proud to have donated over $19 thousand to 20 different nonprofits in our community.
